Here's How a Quartz Watch Works

Battery-powered quartz watch movement

First developed in the late 1970s, quartz watches are a relatively new phenomena in the centuries-old craft of watchmaking. Unlike watches with mechanical movements, quartz watches are a whole different breed.

Essentially, a quartz watch is battery powered. The watch uses a low-frequency, tiny piece of quartz crystal (silicon-dioxide) placed either like an integrated circuit and chemically etched into shape, or shaped like a tuning fork. That quartz crystal serves as the oscillator.

The battery sends electricity to the quartz crystal through an electronic circuit. The quartz oscillator vibrates quickly and with precise frequency (32,768 times/second) in response to the electronic charge. The circuit counts the vibrations and generates regular electric pulses of one per second. The pulses drive the small motor that spins the watch’s hands – offering accurate time measurement (until the battery slows and dies).

The first quartz watch put into production was the Astron by Seiko (1969) and, as a result, the Asian market swiftly cornered the watch business. However, in the early 1980s, Swatch Watch was unveiled and helped to recoup the Swiss watch business that had been ailing since quartz had been introduced due to the Swiss reluctance to embrace quartz technology. After Swatch, other Swiss brands embraced quartz technology, too, adding it to their repertoire of fine watchmaking.

What It Means When a Watch Is a Certified Chronometer

We often field the question, “What is a certified chronometer?” With summer here and extreme activities, such as flying and diving, often taking center stage, it is a good time to address the topic. First developed back in the 18th century — after decades upon decades of research and development — the ship’s chronometer provided a way for sailors and explorers to keep accurate time at sea and calculate longitude. These tools enabled modern sailing and exploration to flourish and, today, certain rugged wristwatches now achieve certified chronometer status.

Essentially, a chronometer wrist watch is a high-precision watch capable of displaying the seconds while housing a movement that has undergone stringent testing in different positions and at different temperatures. The watch is rated under laboratory conditions in a specified testing institute and is then certified as having passed those tests within certain ranges of accuracy and precision. Several chronometer testing institutes exist, but the most prestigious and well known for Swiss watchmaking is the Controle Officiale Suisse des Chronometres – or C.O.S.C.

Watches made in other countries sometimes have their own testing facilities (Germany has the Glashutte Observatory in Saxony; France has the Observatory at Besancon). Sometimes, advanced watch brands test in-house to even stricter standards than the COSC standards. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on the COSC certification. There are three different COSC laboratory testing facilities in Switzerland: Biel/Bienne, Geneva, LeLocle. All of these organizations test the watches based on the same criteria.

The ISO 3159 standards, to which the COSC complies, require each piece to be tested for five to 15 days in five positions at several different temperatures. Measurements are made daily with the help of cameras and based on comparisons with two independent atomic clocks. Only those that have met the precision criteria are granted an official chronometer certificate. Among the list of requirements that must be met before the mechanical watch can be said to have passed: an average daily rate criteria of -4/+6 seconds; a mean variation in rate of 2 seconds; a thermal variation of + or – 0.6; and more.

Certified COSC chronometers are identified by a serial number that is engraved on the movement. They are proven to withstand a host of different outside influences that range from heat and water to pressure and durability — making them rugged, precise tools. Because of the rigorous and intense testing, only about 3 percent of all Swiss watches produced are COSC-certified chronometers. After all, it is not an easy feat.

Cartier Goes Where No Brand Has Gone Before: Meet the Rotonde de Cartier Astromysterieux

Cartier is renowned for its incredible clock work over the centuries. Easily the most coveted Cartier clocks are the Mystery Clocks, see-through clocks that are generally showcased in rock crystal and other clear materials. What makes them magical is that the hands seem to float in space – telling the time without any apparent link to the movement. Now, Cartier has managed to miniaturize the Mystery Clock and turn it into a stunning new wristwatch: the Rotonde de Cartier Astromysterieux Caliber 9462 MC.

Although it is not the first Cartier Mystery wristwatch (others include the Mysterious Hour and Mysterious Double Tourbillon), it does offer a new feat in a style only Cartier could achieve. The mechanical manual-wind movement, Caliber 9462 MC Astromystérieux complication, is entirely visible in the dial portion of the mystery watch — where typically only the hands appear.

Indeed, the central tourbillon cage seems to float in space. Essentially from the crown to the center there is the barrel, main gear train, balance and escapement — all performing a complete rotation in one hour so the the hands (on the escapement) make their 60-minute rotation around the dial to mark time. The watch holds three patents and is one of the most complicated pieces to build.

From the outside looking in through the sapphire crystals, very little of the 408-part caliber (including 188 balls) is seen. Additionally, the space dedicated to the movement’s non-visible gears and components (beneath the tiny outer dial) has been reduced by Cartier’s master watchmakers to the barest minimum – offering a grand-scale work of art and technology. Just 100 pieces of the Rotonde de Cartier Astromystérieux Caliber 9462 MC will be made, cased in palladium. While these watches are incredibly difficult to get one's hands on, they nonetheless demonstrate Cartier's on-going commitment to fine Swiss matchmaking at the highest level.

Vacheron Constantin Unveils Traditionnelle Chrono Perpetual Calendar

Taking inspiration from its archival pocket watches, Vacheron Constantin unveils an all new Traditionnelle Chrono Perpetual Calendar watch, featuring an in-house-made 1142 QP caliber. The 43mm platinum watch holds the Hallmark of Geneva certification. In order to qualify for the prestigious seal, the movement and the watch must be made in the canton of Geneva and must be keenly finished according to strict Hallmark of Geneva standards, known as one of the most rigorous certifications.

Designed and developed entirely in house, the watch offers date, days, months, leap years and moon phases, as well as a direct-drive seconds hand and 30-minute counter for the column-wheel chronograph. The calendar will need no adjustment until March 1, 2100. The new 324-part, mechanical caliber offers 48 hours of power reserve and replaces the previous 1141 QP (which beat at 2.5Hz). The caliber is visible via a sapphire crystal caseback. Key styling elements of this watch include the stepped case, fluted pattern on the back, dauphine-style hands, and the white tachymeter scale and railway minute track.

The gray dial boasts a 22-karat white gold moon display with a smiling moon face and a serious moon face like the old pocket watches. While this new watch is not in stores yet, we invite you in to see our great selection of Vacheron Constantin timepieces. This is, after all, the longest continually operated watch brand in the world.

don’t Buy Any Replica Rolex Watch Until You Read This Important Free Report!

Now let’s look at that bracelet. The bracelet is what holds the watch to your wrist and it accounts for a lot of the value of the whole watch. If the bracelet doesn’t obviously match the watch, prepare to walk. But that bracelet can also help tell you whether that watch is a cheapo fake not worth your cash. Pick up the watch and hold it over a soft surface with the watch facing down. Look at the links in the bracelet. Are they hanging nice and smooth or are they all kinked up like Homer Simpson’s back? The same is true with a Swiss Replica.

Rolex SA was founded in 1905 by the German Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis. Contrary to popular belief, Hans Wilsdorf was neither Swiss , nor a watchmaker. Wilsdorf & Davis was the original name of what later became the Rolex Watch Company. They originally imported Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placed them in quality cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were then sold to jewelers, who then put their own names on the dial. The earliest watches from the firm of Wilsdorf and Davis are usually marked “W&D” – inside the caseback only.

Despite these intricate differences, quality fake Asian watches are continuously getting better. The average Joe or even the mildly sophisticated won’t be able to tell the difference. The old days when fakes had clunky movement, imperfect fonts or poorly made logos are gone. Most fakes now use quality mechanical movements with near perfect components and often have transparent backs so you can see the wonders of copied Asian horology. But now if you shop in the upscale Hong Kong or Bangkok replica markets, you will find fakes that will suit most aspiring American movers and shakers, and give us a good decade or so of use.

It is estimated by Swiss Customs that 40% of replica watches originate in China, although counterfeits are also manufactured elsewhere, including the United States. In October of 2006 police in Florida arrested a woman who had been operating a counterfeit watch business that earned about $8 million in sales. It is estimated that counterfeit watch sales worldwide cost Swiss watch manufacturers more than $600 million per year in lost sales. Once these counterfeit watches have been confiscated, it is the obligation of the Swiss Customs Service to destroy them. In addition, the watch being imported must not include any forged precious-metal hallmarks.

The products we sell are replicas of their genuine counterparts. In noway are we representing them as the genuine watch, nor are weaffiliated with the original manufacturers in any way, shape, or form.None of these watches carry the warranty, nor the parts, of theoriginal manufacturers. Watch Sighting: Armani Exchange Diver-Style Watch

I recently saw this nice looking diver-style watch at the runway T.J. Maxx in Dunwoody, Georgia. This is a nice looking diver-style watch with clean lines, a strong uncluttered dial, and 100 meters (10 atmospheres) of water resistance. It's fine for swimming and snorkeling, but probably not suitable for full-fledged scuba diving. The watch has a 44 millimeter diameter case and a unidirectional rotating bezel. In short it looks like a serious watch.

Since good watches don't stay at the runway T.J. Maxx for long, I looked on Amazon to see if I could find this watch. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one with a stainless steel bracelet. However, the watches that I did find opened up the possibility of alternative color and strap combinations. Dive watches with leather straps provide a more casual but adventurous look. They are certainly worth checking out.

Irreantum Watch: Giving Doxa a Run for their Money
